We will read 2 plays per week. It's a lot. Yes. But this is a 15 week semester in a 7 week course. And they are plays (not novels) and are performed in 2 hours or less. Whenever possible, your instructor will seek out filmed versions of the plays. In addition, your instructor will point you in the direction of specific parts of the play that need your absolute scrutiny.
We will read these plays together, sometimes on a reading app called Perusall. You will need to create an account. Follow the link, and create your account. Once in, enter the course code ADD COURSE CODE upon registration. This will take you to your Perusall site. There you can read and annotate the plays.
The Discussions
Each week, you will annotate and discuss the plays on Perusall.
For this assignment, you are required to annotate each scene of the plays, engaging in discussions with your classmates about the themes and identifying connections between the canonical play and the corresponding "back talk" play. Your discussion board posts will be assessed by THIS RUBRIC.
Performance and Writing
Two parts, (No acting experience required)
For each play paring, you will select a theme that joins each play, and you will choose a monologue or scene from each that you will record yourself reading aloud usingscreenpal.
You will then write an “artist statement” about the plays, explaining how the monologues you selected engage with each other. Additionally, you should describe how the “back talk” play responds to the canonical play in the specific scene you are focusing on.
You will load these onto your course blog. By the end of the course, you will have 4 blog entries. Blogs help you
Improve your digital literacy
Practice creativity because of their visual and interactive affordances
Promote a genre fusing blend of narrative and research voices
Share and update your work in public spaces
I like to use Weebly because it's easy to use. HERE is a video tutorial.
You will select one pairing to revise and present on your ePortfolio at the conclusion of the course.
EPortfolio and Reflection. Because this is a Writing Intensive class, you will be required to submit an entry to an Eportfolio that features your most polished work. Review everything about the ePortfolio HERE.
Participation
As this course is a hybrid course, your attendance will be based on the following:
Attending Wednesday Face to Face classes on zoom (3.45 hours once a week).
Submitting your class notes
Completing all the play readings and discussion on Perusall
Completing the Writing and Performance assignments
Late Assignment Policy
Students may post assignments up to 3 days after a discussion board or assignment deadline.
Work posted during that 3 day grace period will incur a 10 percent penalty, whether the assignment is posted the day after the due date or 2 days after the due date.
Students who submit assignments more than 3 days late will receive a zero on the assignment, unless they have made prior arrangements with the instructor.
Exceptions to the late policy are left to the instructor’s discretion, including whether the late penalty is applied or waived. When in doubt, students must communicate with their instructors. But they should not assume that they can post assignments after the due date.
